Make Practice COUNT!
Too many times we may
think that the more we practice the better we will become. But, that is not necessarily true. Our practice has
to have a purpose in order to become a better golfer. Follow some of the tips below to make your practice sessions COUNT!
PUTTING
Merry-Go-Round
Drill (Made famous by Phil Mickelson in recent years)
Put from 3 feet from six to eight positions around the hole. Challenge yourself to how many you can make. Keep
a record of how well you are doing. WHAT IS YOUR RECORD of NUMBER MADE? Extend the distance to 6 feet and repeat.
Ladder Drill
Putt from 2 feet. If you make it then move to 3 feet. If you make it move to 4 feet. Continue this until
you miss. How many did you make before missing. Also, in this drill if you miss from any distance you must start
again. Again, keep track of how many you can make in a row. WHAT IS YOUR RECORD of NUMBER MADE?
CHIPPING and PITCHING
Practice chipping and pitching from different spots and different distances. How many can you get within TWO-CLUB LENGTHS?
Also, HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU "GET UP and DOWN" IN TWO SHOTS (Chip/Pitch and Putt)?
Pretend you need to get up and down in two to win a golf tournament.
FULL SWING PRACTICE
Instead of hitting to one target-Practice hitting to different targets and
at different distances. Pretend that you need to hit a shot a certain distance.
Play "Nine-Holes" on the range. Play your favorite golf course
on the practice range. Start at Number 1 and hit the tee shot. Then, depending on how well (or poorly) you hit
the tee shot play the second shot. Continue this for 9 or 18 holes.
